For many small businesses, the idea of integrating social advocacy feels like a challenge reserved for large corporations with massive budgets. But the team at FabPatch, an LGBTQIA+ co-owned small business, is proving that consistent, streamlined giving is the key to creating tangible community impact - even on tight margins.

FabPatch started with a strong mission: reduce textile waste by making clothing repair simple with their innovative rub-on patches. However, founders Sophie and the team wanted to go further, demonstrating that social inclusion is an achievable goal for any size company. They set out to build a model that drives commercial success while consistently contributing to LGBTQIA+ youth through Minus18.

The Vision: Repair, Reuse, and Pride

The core FabPatch mission is to keep items at their highest value for longer. Their Pride Repair Patches (Pride Patch) range—featuring heart-shaped designs in Pride and Trans flag colours—is a natural extension of this ethos. Made from recycled plastic bottle waste, these patches allow customers to "wear their values" while repairing the gear they already love.

For the team, this product line was not a one-off campaign; it was about strengthening their core business values every single day. "Every time we process a Pride FabPatch sale, we’re reminded of the small contribution it makes to others," she notes.

The Strategy: Designing a "Frictionless" Giving Model

To ensure their advocacy remained sustainable on small business margins, the FabPatch team developed a streamlined approach to giving that avoided the administrative "boom and bust" cycle of one-off campaigns. They focused on three pillars to create a frictionless fundraiser:

The Fixed-Sum Model: Instead of complex and variable percentages, FabPatch chose a fixed donation amount from each Pride packet sold. This ensures the product remains profitable while providing absolute transparency for the customer, and a reliable income stream for Minus18.

Operational Automation: By establishing secure transfers and a recurring payment schedule early on, the team created a "set and forget" system. This allows the fundraiser to continue automatically without detracting from their daily operations—a vital factor for any small team.

Building Community Trust: Rather than chasing audience reach with short-term stunts, the team focused on authenticity. By making social inclusion a permanent feature of their range and keeping the giving model transparent, they developed a deeper, lasting bond with their loyal "FabRebel" community.

The Result: Evidence of Sustainable Impact

The results of this values-led approach speak for themselves. The strong response to the initial Pride product launch provided early proof that today’s consumers are looking for brands that stand for something—and are willing to support businesses that genuinely embed social good into their operations.

By showing that support for marginalised youth isn't conditional on the size of a business, FabPatch has created an inspirational roadmap for other social entrepreneurs and small businesses looking to make a massive, sustainable difference.
