Minus18, Australia’s charity improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ young people, has launched Queer Youth Now: The National Survey of LGBTQIA+ Youth Voice in Australia.

A national survey of LGBTQIA+ youth aged 13 to 25, the survey aims to address the sorely limited up-to-date data that exists on the experiences of queer young people in Australia.

The goal: to empower the work of services, teams and organisations that support LGBTQIA+ young people around the country – and to inform entirely new projects all over the sector.

The voices of LGBTQIA+ young people matter – yet there is very little data that exists on their experiences in Australia. We’re amplifying the voice of LGBTQIA+ youth to share their experiences, thoughts and desires to shape the future of youth orgs, and services, around Australia.

How Queer Youth Now Was Created

This project was born out of a clear need for data that captures the experiences of LGBTQIA+ young people, nationally. And as Australia’s charity improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ young people, Minus18 is uniquely positioned to engage our youth community, and galvanise tens of thousands of adults who support them.

Our team – ranging from Insights & Analytics to Youth Safety – has developed the survey questions through a collaborative process involving consultations and co-design sessions with LGBTQIA+ youth and community organisations around Australia.

All questions underwent review and assessment by a range of experts evaluating for clarity, inclusivity, relevance and sensitivity. The National Survey of LGBTQIA+ Youth Voice is anonymous and confidential, with participants’ identities and responses protected to ensure privacy.

How You Can Help

By sharing Queer Youth Now with your cohort of young people aged 13 to 25, by sharing it with your professional networks, and by spreading the word of what we’re going to achieve.

It’s vital that we capture a range of voices, ages, demographics, and identities – to truly understand the breadth and depth of LGBTQIA+ young peoples’ experiences. And what matters most to them.

If you have capacity to share Queer Youth Now with your networks, to young people or adults, you can find a range of promotional assets and a messaging guide here.

Where the Information Will Be Used

We’ll analyse the data collected within the National Survey of LGBTQIA+ Youth Voice to form insights, and a report to share with the sector, and the public.

Our goal is to increase the capacity of projects and services supporting LGBTQIA+ youth across the country, by sharing what matters most to queer young people now. We can see how valuable this data will be to services, community organisations, projects, and the passionate folks on the ground making a difference in the community.
