How to have a great Wear It Purple® Day at work
May 18, 2023
Wear It Purple® Day is one of the biggest, and most popular days for LGBTQIA+ inclusion and awareness in workplaces. On Friday August 30, all over Australia, organisations, office posses and small businesses go purple, host events, fundraise – all to stand with LGBTQIA+ young people.
It's been a challenging year for LGBTQIA+ young people, with so many stories in the news and media about discrimination – often about and directly targeting queer youth. It's more important than ever to visibly stand with LGBTQIA+ youth, and to visibly stand out against discrimination.
Let queer youth know they're supported by the whole community – including your workplace or organisation. Wear It Purple® Day is a chance to really level up your allyship and make a difference.

In-Person Events
Going purple on Wear It Purple® Day sends a vital message of support to LGBTQIA+ young people – as well as LGBTQIA+ colleagues, clients, mates, and the wider community.
Our recommendation? Keep it simple. Choose an activity your team or organisation already enjoys, and add a purple, LGBTQIA+ flavour to it. Speak to the importance of LGBTQIA+ education and important conversations. Even small events make a big impact!
Purple morning tea / bake sale
Purple morning teas are a classic, and for good reason! Get the team together, with everyone wearing a splash of purple, bring some purple themed treats and baked goodies, and get chatting about the importance of Wear It Purple® Day. Done and done!
Lunch n' Learn with speakers
We love it when purple events and activities are backed up by education and sharing of knowledge. Organise a lunchtime event with a speaker (or speakers!) to speak about LGBTQIA+ experiences, and allyship. It's a great way to include education in a casual, informal way.
Fundraiser Friday drinks
This one's easy – add a fundraising element, and some big splashes of purple of course – to your Friday bevvies! We love to see it.
Share + watch a Minus18 video
We have loads of videos! And if you aren't confident speaking to LGBTQIA+ topics, they're a perfect way to have us do the talking for you.
Digital or Hybrid Events
Working remotely and working from home has become incredibly common over the past few years. We know how many teams and organisations are spread over multiple states, cities, and countries – and there are loads of ways to celebrate Wear It Purple® Day digitally, from sharing your photos online and on social media, to doing a digital event or activity.
Purple themed morning meeting
Get the team to wear a little purple (or rainbow!), and kick off the day with a discussion about the importance of the day. You could add some friendly competition – who's got the best purple outfit?
Digital Messages of Support
Whether from individuals or your CEO / upper management, share messages of support to LGBTQIA+ young people. Via social media, or via EDM – this sort of visible allyship from leadership makes a difference.
Share Minus18 Videos
Share a Minus18 video (or even tune into our training event together!) then discuss afterwards. Share our content via newsletter, in a purple digital meeting, or via your intranet. Everything contributes to visibility!
Whatever you do – the more purple, the better!

Engage in education
Wear it Purple Day is the perfect time to organise LGBTQIA+ professional training. Fun events are great, but they’re even better when they’re backed up by meaningful change education!
This year, the Minus18 Education Team is hosting a live, interactive digital LGBTQIA+ professional training event, specifically focused on supporting LGBTQIA+ young people. Let us guide you through LGBTQIA+ identities, inclusive language, and how to navigate pronouns. This one's perfect for parents, guardians, family members, as well as service providers, education professionals, youth workers, and folks working in the community sector.
Reserve your spot
The Minus18 Education Team can also deliver inspiring, fun and engaging keynotes and professional training anywhere in Australia – to cohorts with any level of knowledge. These are one of our favourite ways to really take an organisation's celebrations to the next level – especially when paired with an extra Q&A session with our presenter at the end of the keynote.

Share it far and wide
If it’s not on social media – did it even happen at all? Let the whole world know the impact you and your workplace are making, and that you’re a visible ally to the LGBTQIA+ community.
Tag @minus18youth and show us what you get up to! We love seeing your stories and posts on Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin and Twitter. We’ll be re-sharing content from all over the community all day on August 30!
Don't forget to fundraise!
Wear It Purple® Day is an awareness-raising campaign, and the perfect moment to be a visible ally – but what happens after? No matter how you get involved on August 30, make sure that the important work, education, and advocacy doesn't stop by the time August 31 rolls around.
Donate in support of orgs and charities that improve the lives of LGBTQIA+ young people every day, to ensure your day of purple celebration has real, ongoing impact.
If you choose to fundraise in support of Minus18, we can't thank you enough. We improve the lives of LGBTQIA+ young people every day of the year via free, life-affirming events, free resources, and education for the whole community – but we couldn't possibly do it without the support of the community.
Either make a donation directly, or add a fundraising element to your activity or event or social hang. Set up a fundraiser via GiveNow, Tiltify, or similar platforms – or find out more about fundraising below.
