How to celebrate Wear It Purple® Day with mates
June 30, 2025
Wear It Purple® Day isn't just a day for schools and workplaces to celebrate – after all, Wear It Purple® Day is about the whole community supporting and standing with LGBTQIA+ youth.
There are loads of ways to go purple on August 25 with family and friends, in your own community, and even just on social media. And let's face it, you don't even need to take part in an activity to go purple and stand out against bullying and discrimination. Championing the day as an individual still sends a vital message of support to LGBTQIA+ young people – which is more important than ever.
No matter what you're getting up to? First step is to download Minus18's free digital Wear It Purple® Day toolkit – it's filled with event know-how, conversation starters, useful stats, links to resources and loads more. Including a discount code for our online shop!

Go Purple and share it online
Whether you’re catching up and celebrating with pals, or you're keeping your celebrations online and low-key, adding purple to your outfit is the ultimate (and easiest) way to get involved.
Every purple moment of visible pride or allyship sends a message of support to LGBTQIA+ young people, during this time when hatred and discrimination is on the rise.
Share messages of support to LGBTQIA+ young people online in honour of Wear It Purple® Day, or share content on social media to raise awareness and educate folks in your feed or community. And don't forget to tag us via @minus18youth.
We’ll be re-sharing pics and content all day so everyone feels connected, no matter where they are.

Celebrating Wear It Purple® Day with pals!
No Wear It Purple® Day at work or school? That's okay! Celebrate and stand in support of queer youth with friends. There's no correct or incorrect way to do it – do what you and your friends already enjoy!
Just add purple
Our biggest tip for a great event is to take your favourite activity, and just add purple (and a dose of impact via fundraising or awareness-building!). Picnic, dinner party, after work drinks, book club – just give it a purple spin, and add discussion of LGBTQIA+ allyship for good measure.
We've even created a purple Pride Pack to suit any kind of impromptu event, complete with conversation/education cards to help your discussion along.

Watch your favourite LGBTQIA+ film or TV show
Spending a night in to watch your favourite queer film? Sounds excellent to us. Watching your favourite LGBTQIA+ film or TV show – from Love, Simon to Booksmart or Queer Eye – is a super easy way to celebrate the spirit of queer young people with your BFFs on Wear It Purple® Day. You could even use the film as a launching point for a discussion about making lasting change in your community.
Celebrating from home
No matter your location, even if you're doing Wear It Purple® Day solo, there are still ways you can get involved!
For adults
Tune into our special live-streamed, interactive professional development event, all about supporting LGBTQIA+ young people. Our renowned presenters will be running through LGBTQIA+ identities, a guide to inclusive language, and a pronoun how-to, specifically focused on supporting youth. Perfect for teachers, parents, family members, carers, and service providers.
For young people
Wear It Purple® Day is all about supporting LGBTQIA+ young people, so it makes sense that we'd host an event for LGBTQIA+ young people, right?
In fact, this is an event for young people all over the country. LGBTQIA+ youth aged 12 to 19 can join us in-person at the Victorian Pride Centre, AND tune into our digital event (not just a livestream, expect activities and exclusive good times!). Every single ticket is free, and it's going to be a night to remember.

Celebrating with your community
We LOVE how many sporting clubs, Pride groups, community organisations, and smaller groups get involved in Wear It Purple® Day. It's such a wonderfully visible display of allyship with LGBTQIA+ young people.
Our top event tip is, again, to keep it simple and just add splashes of purple to an activity that you know your group will enjoy. Bake sales, fundraising scratch matches (if you're a sports club!), charity auctions, or just a movie night or picnic are some of our favourites. If you're part of a club or org? It's the perfect time to post a message of support to rainbow young people, or dedicate your newsletter to the cause.
Make it a fundraiser!
Wear It Purple® Day is an awareness-raising campaign, and the perfect moment to engage in LGBTQIA+ education – but what happens after? However you get involved on August 25, make sure that the important work, education, and advocacy doesn't stop on August 25.
Donate in support of orgs and charities that improve the lives of LGBTQIA+ young people every day, to ensure your day of purple celebration has real, ongoing impact. If you choose to fundraise in support of Minus18, we can't thank you enough. We could not do what we do without the amazing donations, fundraisers and tireless work of the community. Every donation (including that of fundraisers!) is tax-deductible, and helps ensure our events and resources remain free for young people.
Either make a donation directly, or add a fundraising element to your activity or event or social hang. Set up a fundraiser via GiveNow, Tiltify, or similar platforms – or find out more about fundraising below.

No matter what you get up to ...
...have fun! And of course, the more purple, the better. Together, as a whole community – whether you're LGBTQIA+ or an ally – we can visibly stand out against bullying and discrimination.
